Episode Show Notes

00:13 – Background to this episode – why I was having counselling.

01:05 – The impact this counselling has had on me:

  • It has felt a relatively passive process.
  • I couldn’t see the direction we were heading in after 15 weeks.
  • It felt very self indulgent – like an expensive coffee with a friend but without the coffee.
  • It gave me at least one powerful insight (“instead of either/or, why not both”).
  • I had one powerful emotional experience that seem to come out of nowhere.

04:22 – The type of counselling I have had is Psychodynamic Counselling. Its role is to help make conscious anything unconscious that might be affecting behaviour.

05:38 – I asked my counsellor what she had seen in me and two things struck me:

  • She said talking to me was like being in a pinball machine – pinging from one topic to another rather rapidly.
  • She felt the impact of being able to talk things through with my new girlfriend had a powerful impact on me.

06:34 – I am stopping the sessions for two reasons:

  • Firstly, the quality of the conversations I am having with my new girlfriend matches those I have had in these sessions.
  • The NHS rang me this morning to tell me I am at the top of the waiting list for therapy. My first appointment is tomorrow.
