Episode Summary
At the weekend I learnt from Dr Andy Cope that we feel our thinking. It is an interesting idea gleaned from the UK’s only Doctor of Happiness at a festival of happiness held a few days ago. On the way to the festival, I had an experience where I fully experienced what it was like to feel my thinking.
In this episode I share the story of how I managed to recognise a powerfully destructive emotion yet still make an informed choice on how to act in spite of feeling the way I felt. I’m not quite the Dalai Lama yet, but maybe being able to do what I did is another step forward on my healing journey.
Episode Show Notes
00:12 – At the weekend I went to a conference where I heard Dr Andy Cope (The UK’s only Doctor of Happiness) declare “We feel our thinking”. On my way up to the conference I experienced exactly that.
01:07 – Here is what happened when I changed lanes on the motorway.
02:12 – I felt a range of emotions and sensations in my body almost at the instant I saw the drivers angry reaction to my lane change.
02:57 – My state was not a positive one – it was certainly confrontational.
04:11 – However I noticed it and found my self with two choices:
- Be right and confront and challenge the angry driver.
- Defuse the situation by apologising regardless of who was right (or wrong).
04:45 – I chose the latter, changed my thinking and felt much better as a result.
07:10 – I realise this is what I now have to do with some of the more subtle emotions (and the thoughts that trigger them) that have previously sent me into a low mood.
